GREAT news...We finally have our book tree up and sparkling outside of the Reading Reef. The kids are really enjoying the twinkling lights from the tree and of course the inspirational message that it sends. Reading is one of the most marvelous adventures that children can ever go on!!! Here are two students holding their favorite books sitting beside the tree.

Our Meadowbrook Cubs were so excited about their reading packets they got to take home for Thanksgiving break! They were filled with books and literacy activities on their level.
Here are some pictures that were taken at the lunch and learn today!
We will be having the third grade lunch and learn this Thursday at 12:45. Each parent will receive a "Reading Toolkit" to take home. The toolkits have various strategies and activities that you can implement at home with your child that same day. At the lunch and learn parents will learn strategies to help their child with fluency, vocabulary, test taking strategies, and comprehension. We will also cover the implications of the Read to Achieve Law. Third grade parents please join us this Thursday where we are "building awesome readers." Most of you are probably wondering what exactly Book-O-Ween is and what happened on that day so let me tell you! Each hall was decorated with a different theme from various books that our children read. The themes of the halls were: Superhero Street, Lego Place, Gumdrop Lane, Diary Drive, and Wizard of Oz Way. (A huge thanks to the parent volunteer that decorated for us!) All teachers and students were asked to dress up as their favorite book character. On the day of Book-O-Ween classes traveled to at least one teacher from each grade level and they listened to the teachers read a book with their character in it. Children were exposed to a variety of genres, series, and authors. They were also able to visit with teachers from different grade levels and get to know them a little better. The children were engaged and entranced throughout their Book-O-Ween journey. It was a huge success and we will continue this event in years to come! A huge thanks to the parent volunteers that led the classes around and to the staff for being so dedicated and supportive of invoking a love of literacy in all of our students. Get excited everyone! It is the night before Book-O-Ween when everyone will debut their favorite book character!! Here are a few sneak peeks of the festivities! For our kick off Mrs. Goodwim read a book to the whole school today! Informational text features are features that authors have put in non-fiction books to help readers understand the text. It is important that our students know the different types of features found in non-fiction text and their purpose. Listed below are some informational text features with their purpose listed beside them. It would be a GREAT idea to work on helping your child identify these features at home and talk about their purpose.
Informational Text Features: Labels-tell you about a chart, photograph, or diagram Table of contents-tells you which pages to find topics/chapters on Photographs-show you what something really looks like Captions-label photographs to tell you what the picture is Diagrams-label the parts of a picture Headers-let you know what you will be reading about Glossary-defines words for you that you may not know Bold print-highlights important words that the reader should know on the subject Check out our fifth graders working on naming some informational text features on the new chalkboard!!!!!
